On Thursday, May 21, the Maine Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs voted unanimously that LD1325 "ought to pass as amended." All of the language stating that students must meet standards in some content areas and partially meet in others was REMOVED from the bill. Left in the bill was language about multiple pathways and interventions, but not the personal learning plans. The Committee added language that creates a "partnership group" to work with the Commissioner to develop a plan for awarding high-school diplomas based on standards and on credits and/or a combination. The bill states that the members of that partnership group will include the organizations representing superintendents, principals, school boards, MEA, and "others as appropriate." Commissioner Gendron specifically noted that the arts need to be represented on that group. That group will report back to the Education Committee next January.
The language that was so problematic for the arts is gone, and we'll have a seat at the table when the discussion resumes!
